Direction complements and their extended use

This activity is designed to help you to understand and practise how to use the direction complements and their extended use. You may not know all the animals' names and all the actions they did. Don't worry, all the vocabulary is given, and you are not required to remember all the words. Captions (with gaps to fill the direction complements) and revoicing for all the major actions have been done for you to help you overcome the problem of new vocabulary. You only need to concentrate on the direction of their actions and how to use the direction complements. Grammar explanation and answers are all given at the end of the text, but I'd prefer that you leave them to the end and only use them to check your work. Detailed instruction on how to use the activity are written in the text.

Understanding and translating modal particles

Watch the clip once. Watch it again and make some notes on translation difficulties. Write down the modal particles you can identify and the sentences they are used in. Since we are translating into English, you might want to consult some sources on German modal particles written in English. Think of possible translations. How can you transmit the nuances that the German modal particles bring to the sentence? Consider this from the point of view of a subtitler. What restrictions are there due to the nature of the audiovisual text? You probably won't have to deal with many cuts and the difficulties might rather be on a linguistic level, but consider intonation and speech rhythm in combination with gestures. And some of the participants talk quite fast which means that in subtitling you also have to reduce content.

Captioning for deaf people

Captioning is the perfect tool for deaf or hard-of-hearing people to access media (TV, cinema, video games, etc.).We thought it was really nice of them to base a commercial reaching out to the deaf community. We thought it was creative and sweet and it was nice how they used sign language and subtitiles so that they could get the message out to deaf and hearing people. A caption line should say “hope for today’s deaf children” or “the possibilities of tomorrow.”
