Dear George,

as Noa already pointed out in her first post '1. The audio that students record cannot be stopped, nor from the revoicing component (the play icon could become pause to allow for this) nor from the video.' Do you think it is possible to have the play/pause button as before?
It will be of great use.

Thanks for your time.

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
the problem with the stop for the audio playback that has made me comment out that code and make it only play for now is that it fails to send an event as it should when audio stops playing so that I could turn the stop button back to play again (if user didn't click it but let it play to the end). I'm thinking of adding a timer there to poll regularly if the audio has finished playback so it is still an open issue

regarding revoicing enhancments, I'm pasting below some Greek notes (you can get an idea from the english titles there for some options planned to be added to back-panel of Captions/Revoicing component):

[4/5/2013 3:29:36 PM | Επεξεργασία από τον χρήστη 3:37:55 PM] George Birbilis: (*)
απλά θα μπεί option όπως σου έλεγα για το αν θα πειράζει τo endtime του timeslot αυτόματα στο audio recording (τότε θα μπορείς να εγγράψεις και έξω από το timeslot). ΑΥΤΟ ΜΑΛΛΟΝ θα μπεί ως 2 options, increment end time automatically on audio recording και stop audio recording at end time που θα είναι αμοιβαίως αποκλειόμενα αλλά θα μπορούν να είναι και τα δυο off). Το default θα είναι stop audio recording at end time = true.
[4/5/2013 3:29:50 PM] George Birbilis: αυτό θα είναι off by default όμως (αν κατάλαβα τι είχες ζητήσει)

[4/5/2013 3:31:29 PM | Επεξεργασία από τον χρήστη 3:42:42 PM] George Birbilis: (*)
αντίστοιχα μπορεί να γίνει για το caption text, να δώσεις WPM που θες στο πίσω μέρος και να ορίσει το endtime βάσει του word count και του WPM αυτόματα (πάλι θα ήταν default off). Λογικά θα ήταν textbox "Increment caption endtime automatically using WPM (Words-per-minute) value: [...]" που αν είναι κενό δε θα κάνει κάτι αυτόματα

[4/5/2013 3:33:39 PM | Επεξεργασία από τον χρήστη 3:38:19 PM] George Birbilis: (*)
επίσης για το audio θα έχει option (by default on) αν θα κάνει stop audio playback at caption end time (παρεμπιπτόντως αυτά θα μπορούσαμε να τα λέμε audio captions, αλλιώς πρέπει να τα λες revoicing entries που ακούγεται κάπως)

I think that the recording should stop automatically at the caption end time. Noa and Jennifer, what do you think?
It is misleading to have a different end time in the caption and the voice continuing.

the default option will be to stop recording at caption end time. However since you may have a view where the start/end time columns aren't visible at all (or the end time or duration not visible and just the start time visible) this cannot be the only option

also you may have other scenaria where people create audio descriptions etc. freely over some media

some of the options I was mentioning above to be added are:

- increment end time automatically on audio recording
- stop audio recording at end time (defaiult)
those two will be mutually exclusive, but will be able to deselect both and then have the current behaviour where you can record outside of the time period to show you the effect of overlap with next audio and let you practice till you have no overlap

there are regarding recording, there should also be option on what it does during playback (suppose you loaded a WAV file at an audio entry, or first recorded something, then made the timerange smaller and now it doesn't fit anymore), that is if it will stop playback and end time (that will be the default) or not

the other option I was mentioning in that Greek text is that similar to adjusting endtime based on recorded audio duration (this won't be the default) it could also have "Increment caption endtime automatically using WPM (Words-per-minute)" where you'd give a desired WPM value and it would adjust the end time based on the text length (how many words). Note that there is already a hidden WPM column. Supposing I add colouring to start/end time text when two entries overlap, you'd be able to see then that you wrote too much and when you made the text smaller it would make the duration smaller too based on your desired WPM setting

Dear Roula and George,
It is true that the normal thing would be for the audio to stop automatically when the caption ends, but our captions are very long for revoicing given that they are silent clips. That is why a 'pause' option for the audio or to synchronize pausing the audio when the video is paused would be great.
In any case, students are doing a great job and they are not complaining at all abou the platform. So that's good news. If you want samples of the students' work for your reports or to publish as samples in CLIPFLAIR, just let me know.
Regards,
Noa

Hi Noa,
I definitely have in mind to add that timer for polling if the audio has ended to workarround the issue with not getting a MediaEnded event. Then I'll make the Play button a togglebutton again (Play/Stop)

Regarding students' work, it would be nice if you had them join social.clipflair.net and made a group (if you haven't already) for them to use and upload their work there. That way you can also try peer feedback (students commenting on other students' work). For threaded-style brainstorming discussion you can use the Wall of the group (it supports attachments), else in the forum area of the group can have one topic per project and have students reply there with comments, adding some note regarding which other student's activity they comment about and attaching their work. If there will be just one project can also have them just create new topics on the discussion board, one per student (with their name or some nickname for topic title maybe or with the project title of their own if they are asked to devise one etc.) or something and post their stuff there and receive comments from others.

Noa, until George implements the pause button, an idea would be to create shorter captions, one for each phrase you expect them to say.
Or let them create their own captions at the places they want to say something.
Or does it not work like this?

I agree with George about creating a group. But if they use ClipFlair just once, they might not be interested in becoming members of the social network. In that case, I could create a group where teachers can upload student's work.
What do you think?
