It is best to use PNG image, 800x600 or even lower (say 640x480) I guess for most activities.
The smaller the image bounds, the smaller its filesize will be and the fastest it will download.
It's up to you to decide whether you want say to have an 640x480 image even though you're using a 300x300 Image component (can turn over the component and see at the View properties its current size in your activity [if I remember well that size is in view's pixels, that is without taking in account any zoom factor you may have applied on that specific component]).
If you use a 300x300 image, if users zoom it they will see it more pixelized than when zooming a 600x600 one for example. Haven't yet added an option to disable zooming controls that appear when you move the mouse over the image.
BTW, I have resized the images, but during resize forgot to set "Maintain aspect ratio" option at Paint.net and have resized some to 800x600, whereas they might say need to be 800x585 etc. (you give the new width and paint.net will calculate the corresponding height to maintain the same width to height ratio of the image). So if you see any of them looking deformed, let me know which ones to get them from the original post above and resize them again.
