Regarding Silverlight 5 installation on Mac OS-X:

http://zoomicon.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/troubleshooting-silverlight-installation-on-macos-x/

Some extra notes related to ClipFlair:

- you have to rename any .clipflair.zip files to .clipflair for the open
activity file dialog to allow you to select them on the Mac. Note that
now both on Windows and MacOS-X we save by default automatically to
.clipflair, not .clipflair.zip and the activity gallery has also been
updated to use .clipflair files

- on MacOS-X you can playback
audio recordings but if you record audio on OS-X it records in a bit
depth (24-bit) that isn't supported for playback so you can't hear it.
Still working on finding out what audio recording format is
supported there that will also playback fine

Dear George,

a student working with the revoicing component reported that, as you said in the previous post, she can record her voice but she can't hear it. However, if she saves it she can listen to the audio as a wav file. Is there any news regarding this issue?

Many thanks.

Jennifer

Hi Sara,
I may have a workarround for making Silverlight text-input work on Chrome/MacOS-X too apart from Safari/MacOS-X. Please install an end-user friendly extension to allow switching Chrome's user-agent string (the "identity" of the browser):
http://www.omgchrome.com/user-agent-switcher-extension-for-chrome/

See screenshot in that article, it installs a drop-down menu to select what other browser Chrome will poses as (will tell webservers and plugins or scripts that is when asked for its "identity"). Try setting it to pose as Safari for MacOS-X and see if the Text component of ClipFlair Studio then works OK in Chrome too

I've read by others that the issue is related to WebKit engine that Chrome on OS-X uses too from what I know, so tricking Silverlight into believing it's Safari webbrowser might do the trick (at least that trick worked for others using WebView [an other browser based on WebKit])

if it works, please let us know to put in ClipFlair FAQ

Hi Jennifer,
need to find out which audio formats Silverlight supports on OS-X for recording. The default settings seems to be 24-bit which although recording fine isn't supported for playback by Silverlight. I'll see into adding a button at the back of the captions/revoicing component to pop up a dialog with info on the supported recording formats to see which ones it shows at Macs.

I noticed IE11 was saving .clipflair files as .zip when one downloaded them from the gallery as files (guess same occured on social with .clipflair file attachments to posts).

his was an issue with the MIME type set for the .clipflair file extension on the server and IE11 posing as a "wiseguy".

Now have set the gallery and social websites to use custom MIME type "application/clipflair" for .clipflair files (instead of application/zip and application/octet-stream that I had tried), so in case Mac browsers had similar issue with downloading .clipflair file, it should be working fine now (not changing extension to .zip when you download a .clipflair file)

if somebody hosts .clipflair files at their own webserver, they should keep that in mind (assign "application/clipflair" MIME type to ".clipflair" file extension at the webserver/website settings) as a workarround if they see that issue.

Dear George,

Thanks for your reply.
I am testing Clipflair in a distance learning environment and I got this post from two students:

Student 1:
Clipflair crashing
Clipflair has started crashing all the time since start of Unit 3. It crashes for the silverlight plugin. This was while using Firefox. I tried it with Safari and that crashes and just shows up a white screen. Using a Mac. Anyone else having problems with this?

Student 2:
I could never open Unit 3 assignment this week. I hope I can get it open for next week so I can try to submit it! Did you get clipflair working after?? I'm using windows.

Student 1:
Hi Student 2,
I can open clipflair but it is really annoying now as I might get to play a little bit of the video and then it crashes or I might get as far as recording one line and then I have to save that straight away to file before it crashes and I lose it. So it is a very slow process. I am using Mac. Did you not get to open unit 3 clipflair to do the assignment??

George, I hope you can help solving these issues.

I had previously informed MAC users about the browser, this is what I told them:
COMPATIBLE BROWSER Compatible Browser for installing Silverlight in Mac are Safari and Firefox. Unfortunately Chrome is not supported. Please check System Requirements here: http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx
UPLOAD FILE TO CLIPFLAIR STUDIO As for the activity, Mac users please try to rename any .clipflair.zip files to .clipflair and then try to open it. For instance, rename Unit1-Lab.clipflair.zip Unit1-Lab.clipflair and try to open it. Please also save your ClipFlair activity as .clipflair (not .clipflair.zip) format when submitting your assignment (i.e., Unit1Week1Yourlastname.clipflair and Unit1Week2Yourlastname.clipflair).

Many thanks!
Jennifer

What's Unit 3? Can you send us the activity? Is it on the Gallery?
Did Unit 1 and Unit 2 work fine?

Please find the ClipFlair activity of Unit 3 attached, it is not in the Gallery because of the copyright of the clip.
Unit 1 and 2 worked fine :)
Thanks!

Jen, I can't see any problems with Unit 3, seems to work fine.
By the way, why don't we ask for the video? It's an LLP project, they normally do creative commons licenses.

Thanks Roula, I hope George can help us solving the Mac issue.
I will try to get the creative common licence for the video.
